Book Love 2/23/2021

Welcome to the new webspace! This week I am highlighting two books. First is Later by Stephen King. This is the third Hard Case Crime story from King and, like his previous entries for this imprint, the book is shorter than your usual King entry.

While the cover reminds me of Michael Crichton's original tales of thrill, the story inside is all King. The humor, voice, and mood are all there. A most enjoy entry from this prolific author. From the publisher: "LATER tells teh story of Jamie Conklin, a boy whose unusual abilities could aid his single mom and her police detective lover - but only at a terrible cost."

Part of what makes this book a representation from King's writing is that supernatural ability and the way that it plays out in the story.

Cardinal by Tyree Daye is the second book I'm featuring this week. Daye features images, poems spread across pages, and images of life in North Carolina in this collection. The book opens with a quote from Nina Simone, whose soulful voice could be a soundtrack for this work.

Daye's opening poems almost lead us into the book as a journey before we begin encountering the bold print title and entry style of a verse collection. Images from backyards and outside the window punctuate entries like "God's Work."

Elsewhere, Daye celebrates other poets' work and infuses the pages with experience, elegance, and power.
