Author Stephen McClellan was kind enough to share a copy of his latest work, The Space Between Fire and Ashes, my review and as a giveaway to one of my students. I will first note the meaningful center of this work – there is a heart to the words. As the author wrote in my copy, “May we find hope, healing, and the courage to endure.” This purpose is clearly set from the very first line.
Here are a few other notable elements of the book:
· The voice of the book is written in an engaging way. I felt the sense of a character coming together from page to page, and I enjoyed the diary entry aspect of the work, as well. The reader grows with this character through the span of the book, and has a close knowledge of them.
· There are turns of authorial phrase in the book that I found appealing. For example, McClellan writes, “The expression of the girl’s face had kidnapped my mind for a while.” I always appreciate aspects of poetry and clever wording that arrive in prose.
· While not a mirror for some, the inclusion of faith and faith community, including worship services, is in some ways a view into the way of living for some folx, and a well-drawn example for those readers who identify as members of a faith community.
