An Interview with Ariel Medel

1. What initially drew you to the comics medium?

The art and the stories. I’ve always felt attracted by movies in the sci-fi, fantasy, action and adventure genres. I’ve also always loved drawing as a form of expression. I’d say mythology played a part, too. I’ve always been fascinated by it. So, with superhero comics having elements from many of those things, as a fan, I felt drawn to them from an early age. But it was only when I became a teenager that I was able to actually collect them. And later on, it only felt natural to try to do them professionally. Of course, I started discovering and enjoying other genres. 2. What do comics allow you to do as a storyteller?

As I said, I’ve always loved stories. Mainly, those mythological. They have this sense of meaning, of grandeur. Like Star Wars with the force. And Superman, like Hercules, descending to earth and becoming the hero. The hero in every age and culture has certain traits and has a journey to complete, a path to walk. So, I like to do my own version of that. 3. Please tell us about Adelita 3017 and any other work you'd like to share about.

Well, if people want to follow my printed work, I finished a 5-issue stint on Evil Ernie a few months back, and the trade paperback is coming out in August. I’m also excited for my first cover for IDW on TMNT: The Armageddon Game-Alliance #01, which is coming out in August and another cool project is Milestone, and indie comic for which a campaign is launching soon. But I’m very happy to announce that my creator-owned project Adelita 3017 is finished.

Set in a futuristic post-apocalyptic world, the story follows Adelita, a character based on the archetype of the female soldier in the Mexican war of Revolution. It’s influenced by movies like the 80s Mad Max movies and Star Wars, along with elements from Mexican folklore, of course. You’ll find anthropomorphic coyotes, witches, giant iguanas, robots, rotten flesh skeletons and of course a plethora of Mexicans! All packed into an action-adventure comic with a compelling story and a mystery that will unravel through the mini-series. We should have a campaign announced pretty soon and hope to do a four-issue story arc. 4. Where can we find more information about your work?
