An Interview with artist Neil Vokes

1. What initially drew you to comics?

--I grew up back in the late '50s and when you got sent to the barber shop, you would usually see a pile of comics there for the kids to read while waiting your turn - Far as I can recall I've always been a very visual learner - comics just connected with me on that level.

2. What do comics allow you to do as a storyteller?

--Though I love drawing comics, my 1st love is movies - I am a film fanatic - As I never had the cajones to pursue a film career and really enjoyed sitting alone in a room drawing pictures, the thought of telling stories in a comic and not having to leave my room to do it sounded delightful - I can tell all the stories I want on paper fulfilling, indirectly, my dreams of making "movies".

3. Please tell us more about Oemnibus and any other work you'd like to share about.

--The Oemnibus isn't really my project specifically - it's a collection of Michael Oeming's work firstly - My only involvement was that I drew the story Parliament Of Justice which Mike wrote - it was the 1st time in years of mainstream comics work where I could draw something original which showcased my own style - and Mike did a short story using a character I co-created with writers Robert Tinnell and Todd Livingston for our graphic novel THE WICKED WEST volume 1 & 2.

Since leaving the worlds of Marvel and DC (very gratifying experiences but creatively limiting) I've been primarily drawing original creations of my own in collaboration with talented writers such as Tinnell, Kurt Busiek, Jack Herman and a few others - Including titles such as EAGLE, THE WICKED WEST, THE BLACK FOREST, DEATH'S DARK ANGEL, FLESH AND BLOOD, DARK TALES FROM THE VOKESVERSE and more - and recently I've returned to doing some work on a new FRIGHT NIGHT comic for American Mythology Productions - I have a very exciting project coming up in the near future (fingers crossed) which will tie in nicely with my love of horror films also. I've been at this crazy biz for 38 years now and can see no end in sight.

4. Are there any storylines/characters you'd like to tackle next?

-- There are a few mainstream characters I'd have loved to do, such as Batman, but they never came my way (though who knows?) - Besides I'm busy enough with my own projects.

5. Where can we find more information about your work?

--I have a lot of art in my Facebook albums if anyone is interested https://www.facebook.com/nvokes/ and I try to keep my fans on there informed of my work - they can also request commissions through there as well, and my Blog (which I'm very bad at updating - lol) http://vokesfolks.blogspot.com/
