1. What fills your creative wellspring?
Books, books, books!!! Also, TV, movies, games and stuff.
Combine any of the things you enjoy with the things that happen to you in real life and you've got the start of something that could be new and unique.
For example, I took the idea of Star Wars Origami, combined it with some embarrassing things that happened to me when I was in school, and got a whole book series.
2. What inspired you to begin writing and creating for young readers?
I really, really love to write and tell stories and young readers are the ones who like to hear the kind of stories I like to tell. Adults are welcome to read my books too, but many of them are too busy reading boring books!
3. Any tips/messages for young creators?
Don't sit down to make something and think: This is going to be perfect and it will make me famous.
Make 10 or 100 or 1,000 somethings -- not all at once!-- and think: one of these might be the perfect start to something that will make me famous.
4. I love that you link to and expand on Star Wars -- any plans to visit any other shared universes or create more with Star Wars?
I have had so much fun playing around in the Star Wars galaxy, the Marvel Universe, and even Geronimo Stilton's New Mouse City.
But now, I'm really focused on writing and drawing the adventures of my own character(s), Two-Headed Chicken.
5. Any recent or upcoming titles you'd like to share about that we can look forward to?
Yes! The first Two-Headed Chicken graphic novel will be out this fall!
