1. I'm a former middle grades teacher, so we have an interest in working with this age group in common. What draws you to write for middle grades readers? When I first started writing with the goal of being published, I wrote young adult manuscripts (geared for ages 12 and up). I even thought From the Desk of Zoe Washington would be a YA novel. But a critique partner who read early chapters for me said they felt the story felt more middle grade. I realized they were right, and made the switch. Since then I've realized that my voice is more suited to middle grade, and I really love writing for this age group! I love exploring themes that are important to middle grade readers, like friendship and family. I also love reading middle grade books, and am happy to be part of this community of readers and writers. 2. What is your secret for writing an engaging mystery? With mysteries, you want the main character to learn the important information little by little, so it builds suspense. I also try to end each chapter on some sort of cliffhanger or emotional beat that makes the reader want to turn the page. It's also helpful to have scenes in the book where your main character experiences some sort of setback.
3. What message(s) do you want to share with your readers and the world? I really want to inspire kids with my books - inspire them to stand up for what they believe in, and follow their dreams. I also hope to entertain them, since at the end of the day, reading is meant to be fun! 4. Any message for teachers who use your books in class?
If any teachers are using my books in class, they should know that I have some resources on my website! HERE they can find teaching guides for From the Desk of Zoe Washington and A Soft Place to Land, as well as bonus content like Zoe's cupcake recipe and a song playlist. I also do virtual and in-person school visits, and love visiting classrooms. If they're interested, they can find more info HERE.
