An Interview with author Jennifer Poulter

1. What inspires you to write for young readers?

I loved reading as a child and now have five grown-up children and seven grandchildren all of which inspire me!

2. What do picture books allow you to do as a creator?

I love the process of collaborating. Seeing my story brought to glorious, colourful life in the hands of a gifted artist/illustrator is an immense pleasure. They add their own dimensions to the story which, for me, enriches the story as a whole!

3. Please tell us about your work with Word Wings, as well as any other projects and particular titles you'd like to share about.

I had to take a break from publishing for family reasons but have kept on writing - it is what I do! Word Wings publishes my collaborative work with gifted illustrators from all around the world. I write under J.R.Poulter (mainly for children and YA) and under JR.McRae (my maiden name) for poetry for a more mature audience and short stories.

I chose the name Word Wings because it says to me that imagination expressed in words gives us wings, lifts us out of the ordinary into the extraordinary, allows us to make our dreams tangible, and gives us the ability to reach out to others and inspire creativity in them!
