An Interview with author Jim Amash

1. What initially drew you to comics?

The Adventures of Superman starring George Reeves had me hooked at age five, and before I turned six, Batman starring Adam West inspired me to start drawing. That prompted my next-door neighbor to give me some comic books, and that is when I decided to become an artist.

2. Please tell us about Sonic or any other recent work you'd like to highlight.

I inked/finished Sonic the Hedgehog comics for twenty-one years, and since 1998, I have done the same on many Archie Comics titles. I've also done freelance work for other companies. As a comic book historian, I have been an associate editor of Alter Ego magazine since 2001, and for many years, was the head writer/interviewer. I've written/co-written/co-edited five books about comics and their creators. And for many years, I have been an awards committee member of The Bill Finger Award, which you can read about here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Finger_Award_for_Excellence_in_Comic_Book_Writing

3. What do comics allow you to do as a storyteller?

An inker/finisher's job is to aid the storytelling with his craft. That means balancing the page with line weights that define the shapes of characters/objects, adding textures to balance out the black, white and gray areas of the page in order to help create the environment of depicted situations, and while doing that, direct the reader's eye from panel to panel for easy reading of the proceedings. The level of that process depends on whether you are working from breakdowns or finished pencils.

4. Please tell us about your creative process.

I mostly answered this question with my last answer. I look at every page as a cohesive unit of art containing individual panels. Everything I do is in service to providing a balanced page of art that tells a section of a story to the reader.

5. Where can we find out more about your work?

I don't have a website, but there's plenty of my work out there on the internet. And I'm easy to chat with.
