1. What drew you to write for young readers (although older readers can enjoy your work, too)? I fell in love with reading when I was around six or seven years old, so it always felt natural to write for young people because that was when I discovered how magical reading could be. I also think middle grade in particular is a wonderful time of exploration and hopefulness, which makes writing for this age group particularly wonderful and satisfying! 2. What themes/messages do you want to share in your work? The themes I explore most in my work revolve around family and community. 3. Please tell us about your creative process, including what you do for creative restoration. I always write my first drafts as fast as I can, usually within one or two months. I find first drafts very difficult; it requires hard work, persistence, and lots of snacks to get through it. After I get rough ideas in that first draft, I love the revision process when I move things around, delete sections, and refine the language and the plot and character arcs. Even though each book feels like moving a huge mountain, I love the writing process. For creative restoration, I love exploring another artistic medium, like drawing or painting. 4. What message would you send to teachers who share about your books with young readers?
I have the highest respect for teachers and the work they do day after day. I am so grateful when a teacher shares my books with their students - it is the best kind of praise!
