An Interview with author Roger Moule

1. Please tell us a bit about The Fury of Kings.

The Fury of Kings is the first volume of the three-book Erland Saga. It’s set in a medieval-inspired fantasy world and begins at a time of great upheaval: the king’s son has been murdered, the new heir is from a rival family, and on the endless mountain of Eryispek a mysterious dark power is stirring. The story follows the fortunes of a variety of characters as they attempt to navigate the turmoil.

2. What draws you to the fantasy genre?

The best epic fantasy combines the macro with the micro: vast, sweeping, earth-shattering conflicts that are grounded by the personal dramas of complex individuals. That’s not unique to fantasy – the same is true of other genres like sci-fi and historical fiction – but with fantasy you also have the juxtaposition of magic with (usually) a low-tech world, which broadens the scope of the potential drama: you have sources of conflict that are beyond general human understanding, and also the traditional clashes over resources, land, power etc.

3. What has inspired you to create the fictional world found in the book?

Imagination is basically alchemy, but I will say that medieval Europe is a rich vein of inspiration. The Fury of Kings’ inciting incident – the death of the heir leading to a succession crisis – is a pretty classic catalyst for historical conflict e.g. the sinking of the White Ship in 1120. Naturally, I also have to credit the work of other authors, both fantasy and non-fantasy, whose work made me think ‘damn, I wish I could create something like that’ – I think most authors get drawn to the vocation because they want to write the sort of book they would like to read.

4. What is next in your writing journey?

The Fury of Kings is my debut, so I don’t know entirely what to expect! I recently completed a draft of Book 2, which my editor and I are working on, and I am currently drafting Book 3, which mostly consists of banging my head against the keyboard hoping something coherent appears. Whatever comes next, I plan to enjoy it: it’s an absolute dream come true to be publishing a fantasy novel.
