1. What drew me to comics?
My dad grew up reading comics during the 60’s, his favorites were Thor and Daredevil so riding in the car with him, he would tell me stories of his childhood playing like he was Thor with a ball-peen hammer or any number of heroes. There was a traveling comic seller that would come to malls and setup for a few days or a weekend and my dad would show me ones he read growing up. I remember I would always look for Aquaman for some reason, I don’t know why, but still to this day he is my favorite superhero. On top of all that, I grew up in a golden age of superhero cartoons. I had reruns of super friends, X-Men, Batman: The Animated Series, and later Justice League and X-Men: Evolution, we’re two of my favorites. So I don’t know if anything drew me to comics, I was in deep from my earliest memory.
2. What do comics allow me to do as a creator?
Art has always been a big part of my life. I always liked making stuff, painting, crafts, and such, but drawing was my main hobby. I was quiet and would sit in the floor for hours drawing everything (mostly Star Wars). So now I’m working on comics, and it makes me feel like that same kid in the floor drawing Star Wars (still ironically). It gives me fulfillment where no other job has because no other job I’ve had is as personal as being an artist. It’s the best job in the world.
3. Please tell us about your work on Show Me History, Star Wars, as well as any other projects you'd like to share about.
I’ve had the opportunity to work on some great projects that have challenged me and helped me become a better artist. My first published work was for a book called Hero Cats from Action Lab. It was a challenge doing my first book about some of the hardest to draw creatures imaginable, cats. Everyone wants to draw Spider-Man or Batman, but that’s not where you start, and even drawing a book about cats, I gave it my 100% and learned so much from the 3 issues I did.
Some of my next projects were all ages historical biographies. One about Muhammad Ali and the other about Neil Armstrong. Again, not Batman or Spider-Man, but that’s what you do, you take on challenges that help you grow and push you to be better. Those were big books that required likenesses and historically accurate settings, things I had never really tried.
I did covers here and there and my own self-published book through Kickstarter called Black Fin: the Barbarian Shark. It's a play off of things like He-Man, Conan, and classic 80’s and 90’s toy related cartoons. And now I’m working on my absolute dream job, drawing Star Wars comics. Star Wars is my biggest fandom and I’ve followed the movies, books, and comics from a very young age. And now getting to work with Dark Horse on my first book with them Star Wars: Tales from the Rancor Pit fulfills a lifelong dream of being a part of my favorite franchise.
