1. What initially drew you to comics?
My father used to read a lot of adventure books and comics. He was kind of a nerd, I guess, when this term didn't even exist...lol.
So, my house was filled with Isaac Asimov books, Tarzan, other sci-fi authors, and we used to go to the movies a lot, too. He would also buy comics. The one comic that really made me work in this field was Frank Miller's Dark Knight Returns. When I read that history and saw that art, I was in love with comics and have been since.
2. What do comics allow you to do as a creator?
Well, everything! Apart from my work as an artist in the US, I also write my own stories here in Brazil. Comics for me are one of the best ways to make an idea come true, because in movies or animation, you need lots of people, time, and work. I, in front of my computer (or inks and paper), alone am able to create universes and bring them to life, no budget restrains. That, for me, is magic.
It's also great when you and another writer and colorist get to create together. It brings things together you couldn't do alone. Also, I've been drawing since I was five. I used to sit in front of the TV, watching animation and trying to portrait my favorite characters, so comics also allow me to express myself in art form.
3. Please tell us about your work on Quad (as well as any other projects you'd like to share about).
Quad was a self-publishing series we did in Brazil starting in 2013. We did 4 volumes of 120 plus pages each, always with the idea of a sci-fi collective universe, as the series progressed. We show how the characters are connected. We had a great response from the public here, and last year, Behemoth offered us to publish the series in the US, if sales go well, and we already have 16 issues ready.
My most recent works in US comics include the mini-series Self Made with Mathew Groom (Image Comics), Last Flight Out, with Marc Guggenheim (Dark Horse), and I'm one of the artists on the Radiant Black series, from Kyle Higgins and Marcelo Costa.
