An Interview with comics creator Greg Lockard

1. What initially drew you to comics?

The art drew me in as a child. Starting with Archie, Betty, Veronica and Jughead and moving over to the X-Men of the mid-90s, and finally over to Vertigo in the late 90s. The long-form serial storytelling kept me hooked: epic stories across multiple genres (sometimes within the same book/story!!!) and the "marriage" of words and pictures by brilliant creative teams have fueled a lifetime of comic enjoyment and fascination with how they are made.

2. What do comics allow you to do as a creator?

Comics allow you to collaborate with artists and create something that would be completely impossible alone. Liebestrasse would be a very different story as a film or a novel-- although novels and films influenced the creation and production greatly. Tim Fish (artist/co-creator) came up with the image of two men falling into bed in Berlin and we built the story together from there-- I can't imagine this story without this specific collaboration.

3. Please tell us about your work on Liebestrasse, as well as any other projects you'd like to share about.

Liebestrasse took a very long time to write-- with a day job as a freelance editor and the research into the topic. It was a massive undertaking and I am thrilled it has finally been released in print (by Dark Horse Comics) for everyone to discover. It's the tale of two men falling in love in Berlin as the Nazis rise to power in the 1930s. Tim Fish (artist/co-creator), Héctor Barros (colorist), Lucas Gattoni (letterer) and I all poured ourselves into this story and I am so proud of the results.

My next graphic novel from Comixology Originals is with a new artist that I am not allowed to talk much about but I will say that is it a road trip through the American Southwest by a queer rodeo star and the journey he and his beloved horse go on could be classified as an "Acid Western"...
