1. What drew you to comics?
I first picked up a comic when I was 3, before I could even read. It was a Star Wars comic, and I loved the films and was really excited for new content. I loved the art, and the rest is history.
2. What do comics allow you to do as a storyteller?
Great question! Comics allow me to try my hand at directing, cinematography and visual effects, without the need for a whole film production crew. I studied film in college, and I get to put some of that training to use when I draw comics. My main goal in every comic I do is authenticity--I want the reader to believe in the characters and the emotions and reactions they have. If I can pull that off, then I feel I've succeeded as a storyteller.
3. Please tell us about your creative process.
Since I don't write my own comics (yet!), my creative process always starts with getting a script from whatever writer I'm working with. I'll read through it once, and then go back and put my artist cap on. I start working on thumbnail sketches of the pages at this point. This is the most crucial and time-consuming part--choosing angles, deciding on frame sizes and gathering any reference I need. After my thumbnails are approved, I work on the lineart. I'm mostly digital these days, so I do it in Clip Studio Paint. I send in the high resolution files for the inks and wait for colors. When I do covers, I do the colors myself, and that can take anywhere from 2-5 days.
4. Please tell us about Morning Glories and any other work you'd like to share about.
Morning Glories is about a prestigious private school, and focuses on a group of new students and their thrilling experiences at this strange and mysterious academy, where they must band together to survive evil teachers, murderous students and interdimensional beings. It was my first major creator owned work and I'm extremely proud of it. I'm also proud of Engineward, which came out in 2020, and is a post apocalyptic tale set in the far future when Earth is a myth, and features a girl named Joss, who must deliver her planet from the evil clutches of the Zodiac-like Celestials, who rule their planet with an iron fist.
5. Where can we find more information about your work?
I'm online across the various social media as Supajoe, and that's the best place to find the latest updates about my work. As well, people can find a lot of my work online at http://supajoe.artstation.com
