An Interview with comics creator Soussherpa (Robert T. Baumer)

1. What initially drew you to comics?

I've always had the aptitude to draw ever since I can remember. People always liked what I did. I remember watching reruns of the old Batman series, the Spiderman cartoons, and the old Superman T.V. Shows. I would get comics when they were sold in Drug stores (now called Pharmacies). It's just something I was always interested in.

2. Please tell us about your creative process.

Regarding comics, I usually get a picture in my mind as soon as I read the script. I read the script twice usually to avoid making any errors.

I think almost in movie terms to get a flow going and try to draw it in a way that makes narrative sense. I do a thumbnail rough, then tight pencils and then finish it with inks.

3. What subjects/styles are you drawn to?

As far as "Art" in general I'm very eclectic. I like the Renaissance Painters/ Sculptors (Davinci, Michaelangelo, Botticelli, Raphael, etc), The surrealists', cubists, abstract expressionists', and modern art. I won' make a long list. I think it's important, not just for an artist but just for the reason that any art is one of the good things in life and should be experienced fully.

With Comics, I knew the names of artists before I knew the name of the Presidents. Neal Adam, Jack Kirby, Alex Raymond, Gene Colan, Again: I won't make a long list. I tend to be drawn to darker styles, Like Adams, or Finch, which is kinda weird, because my style tends to be clean and I don't use shadows as much as they do. I like artists who can effectively convey a story by getting visual information across. In comics, the art is in service to the story IMHO.
