An Interview with comics creator Todd Dezago

Updated: Feb 14, 2023

1. What initially drew you to the comics medium? As a kid, I was drawing all the time and, of course, was immediately drawn to the colorful, wonderful world of comics. A friend had a formidable collection of DCs and was generous enough to lend me some. I was hooked and soon started a collection of my own. And it grew and grew and I was lost in that world. As I grew older, I began writing and drawing my own comics and eventually was lucky enough to be hired by Marvel to write stories about many of my favorite characters. 2. As a long-standing comics writer with many credits, what is the experience of doing this work like? A dream come true, of course. I feel like the luckiest guy on the planet to've been able to be a small part of Marvel and DC history and have loved every project I've worked on. And though I've become friends with many of my writing and art heroes, I am still star struck whenever I meet the people who have thrilled and entertained me with their incredible work.

3. You've been central in so many comics creations. Is there any experience that bubbles to the top as being of the most positive creations and/or collaborations? I have been lucky there too in having the opportunity to work with some amazing artists and exceptional editors. The beauty of working in comics is that each and every new collaborator brought with it its own new energy. Of course, I think my most positive and creative collaborations have been with the late Mike Wieringo and my longtime comics partner, Craig Rousseau. Mike and I were paired on Sensational Spider-Man and became fast friends during our first phone conversation. We saw in one another kindred spirits in the kind of comics we loved and the kind we wanted to create. We enjoyed working together so much that we went on to do our own creator-owned series, Tellos. And Craig and I were working together on a Tellos side-project, when we developed our own creator-owned called The Perhapanauts. We've been working on that for quite some time now, always finding more stories to tell about our crazy crew of cryptids.

4. Please tell us about The Perhapanauts and any other projects you'd like to share about. The stock answer goes like this; I had always been fascinated with the strange and paranormal. The Bermuda Triangle, UFOs, Bigfoot. When Craig and I first considered developing a comic together, he conjured the old adage; "Write what you know." I always thought that a the best episodes of The X-Files were when Mulder and Scully were out in the woods looking for some weird monster. So The Perhapanauts is about a secret team working for a clandestine organization, tracking down the eerie and bizarre creatures that might show up in our world from time to time. The twist is...this team is also made up of strange and unusual creatures like bigfoot, a ghost, a chupacabra...Craig and I are currently repackaging and publishing our seven trade collections with plans to release two new hardcover graphic novels over the next few years. 5. Where can we go to learn more about your work? Oh, you can check out http://www.perhapanauts.com or Homepage - Mike Wieringo
