An Interview with Graphic Novelist Matthew Reese

Q1. What inspires you to write and create?

A1: Growing up, I would sometimes really enjoy watching certain animated shows. Then I thought, "what if I create my own cartoon universe?" Then I did it.

Q2: When did your author and artist journey begin?

A2: It didn't really start until 2012, that's when I made the earliest sketches of my book series. Even still, most of my characters are originally from before 2012. I put them in the same setting and went from there.

Q3: Please tell us about your latest creative publication.

A3: Matthew's Rockin' World Superstars is my first self-published comic book that would be the equivalent of a movie. Every character and setting I created for the book are all original, but the characters "M Kool" and "J Epic" are fictional versions of myself and a close friend. The book was originally published through Lulu in 2020, but due to lack of sales, I moved it to Amazon in 2021. It was scripted, edited, and drawn entirely by myself.

Q4: Please tell us about your creative process.

A4: To make the book, first I wrote out a script. Then I mapped out the storyboards according to the script, and drew the final product over them.

Q5: What genres and ways of storytelling do you prefer?

A5: I like writing a mix of Comedy and Science Fiction. I most definitely prefer visual storytelling, that's why I made it a comic book.

Q6: What is your message for young authors and comics makers?

A6: Always, ALWAYS, reach out to a publisher to help you sell your books. Trying to sell your book yourself is near impossible. Believe me, I tried.

Q7: What is next for you?

A7: I have plans to make more Matthew's Rockin' World books. Right now, I'm planning on making it a trilogy. I'm estimating that all three books will be complete by 2025.

Q8: Where can we find more information about your work?

A8: I created social media pages for my book in case anyone would like to follow them. You can find me on Facebook, Instagram, DeviantArt, and Twitter. But I don't make that many posts on them, I mainly just use Facebook.
