An Interview with Jennifer Brody

1. What initially drew you to write for young readers.

The books I read when I was younger profoundly shaped me and made me the writer I am today. I wish to give that experience to the next generation of readers. My younger readers are the best. The fan mail from kids for my Disney Chills series, including fan fiction covers and stories, are particularly amazing. Plus, if you can get a kid excited to read a book, that can change their life forever. I also hear from a lot of parents who are grateful that their child loves reading now thanks to the series.

2. What message/s do you hope to share in your work?

My work is very character-forward, and reading teaches empathy. I play a lot in sci-fi and horror and tackle issues like immigration, militarization of space, discrimination and bullying, and more.

3. Please tell us about your latest book (and any future work you’d like to share about).

My debut for "Star Wars" was published last month in "Stories of Jedi and Sith." I tackled Darth Vader in a new canon short story called "Blood Moon Uprising." My next book out is "Once Upon a Scream" featuring Maleficent--my favorite Disney villain. It's the sixth book in the Disney Chills series and comes out on August 2nd. I'm currently on deadline writing Book 7 with villain TBA ... that is slated to come out in 2023.

4. Any message for young writers and creators — and the teachers who work with them?

Keep reading ... good readers make good writers and good humans in general. Read broadly. Read books you're not even sure that you'd like at first. Share what you love reading with others. Becoming a published author is a war of attrition. Those who hang in there through rejection and revision and keep writing and learning and growing are the ones who eventually succeed. Find great teachers and mentors who inspire you. Don't lose focus on the core of a story and what made you want to write it in the first place.

5. Where can we find more information about your work?
